Greenhoff put United ahead with a dipping volley, before Cunningham set up Tony Brown to level the scores. A neat backheel by Regis then played in Len Cantello, who fired into the roof of the net. Gordon McQueen and then Sammy McIlroy put United 3-2 ahead, but Brown levelled before half time.

Albion had a string of chances in the second half, with Cunningham finally putting his team ahead. Regis then finished superbly for West Brom’s fifth and sealed the victory.
